Some Press for Radio Free Urbana, an Experiment in Collective Community Radio

As I’ve mentioned once or twice before, the Urbana-Champaign IMC is working to get a new licensed low-power FM stations off the ground here, called WRFU, or Radio Free Urbana. The license was granted to the Socialist Forum of Champaign County, which is a non-sectarian advocacy organization, largely due to the efforts of Mike Lehman, who is also one of the founding members of the U-C IMC. Mike kept up with the paperwork even after it looked like Urbana would have no open LPFM frequencies, and refiled when a frequency opened up.

From the start of the U-C IMC, we imagined that if the LPFM license came through–and at that time in 2000 there were several organizations also applying–the IMC would be the perferct venue to host the station, especially since the SF didn’t envision itself being the sole proprietor of a radio station.

At the beginning of June we held the first big public information meeting for WRFU and got many more people on board to help raise the initial funds we’ll need to put the station on the air and get organized.

The student-run weekly paper here, the Buzz, just ran a nice article on WRFU, which I hope will stimulate more interest.

Mike and Drew, who is also the producer of the mediageek radioshow give some very articulate explanations of how the station will run. We plan to operate the station as a true collective, under consensus, and I think we’ve found an innovative way to organize how airtime is divided up and programmed.

It really is an experiment in a different way of doing community radio. I really do plan to write more about this approach and give some context and explanation. In the mean time, you can read the RFU organizational structure, which puts down the parameters for how we imagine the station will run, and the FAQ which puts some of this into more plain English prose.

National Summit On Community Wireless Happening August in Urbana

From their press release:

The Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network (CUWiN), Prairienet, and Free Press invite you to join us for a national Community Wireless Networking Summit August 20-22, 2004 in Urbana, IL. “Making the Connection: The 2004 National Summit for Community Wireless Networks” will focus on grassroots action, impacting national regulations and policies, and building a coalition of local groups, researchers, policy leaders, decision-makers, and community activists.

It’s time we organized to take the public airwaves back from corporate interests. Community Wireless Networks offer more services for cheaper prices and are owned by the communities that deploy them. Anyone interested in making the “public interest” the number one priority in our wireless telecommunications infrastructure should definitely attend this summit.

Community Wireless Developers from across North America will be demonstrating cutting-edge technologies; researchers and programmers will discuss recent breakthroughs and developments; and policy-makers and funders will strategize with participants on how to launch new initiatives.

More information and registration options are at the conference website.

I just had a brief e-mail exchange with Sascha, one of the conference organizers, about adding a session on streaming media over wireless. He seems enthusiastic, so it’s all about the details.

Champaign-Urbana’s Community Wireless In the News

The Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network project got a big boost this year when it won a $200,000 grant from the Open Society Institute. The project is working to build a decentralized wireless mesh network that leverages lean Unix bootable CD-ROMS that drive nodes made out of otherwise obsolete hardware, like 486 PCs.

The guys behind the project are pals of mine, and I’ve had the pleasure to watch it take shape over the last few years — it was even the topic of the first mediageek radio show in 2002.

The OSI grant has given them an opportunity to really focus on the project with fewer worries about funding. Additionally, the project is getting more attention in the community wi-fi world and the mainstream press.

Wi-Fi Networking News posted about the project and a conversation with coordinator Sascha Meinrath, with whom I’ve worked extensively at the U-C IMC.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote a story on the project back at the end of March.

Mediageek radio show producer Drew Tarico interviewed the project’s co-founder Zach Miller on the Feb. 13, 2004 edition of the program.

Review of Champaign-Urbana & Central Illinois Media Ownership On-Line Now

On the last two Fridays, the mediageek radio show has featured a critical examination of media ownership in Champaign-Urbana and Central Illinois. These two programs are now archived for listening on-line:

Part 1, from April 2, features a review of radio and newspaper ownership, including a closer look at the Illini Media Company, the student-run non-profit that owns a daily newspaper, a weekly newspaper and a commercial radio station.

Part 2, from April 9, features a review of TV ownership, including close looks at owners Sinclair (the Clear Channel of local TV stations) and Nexstar, along with an analysis of what the FCC’s new ownership rules might allow to happen if and when they go into effect.

We did these two programs as part of WEFT’s Spring Pledge Drive because only non-profit community media is willing to critically examine media ownership issues. To the best of my knowledge, within the last 8 years or so, my radio programs and articles for the U-C IMC website and newspaper have the only continuing critical coverage of media ownership in Champaign-Urbana.

Urbana Zine Reading, Chicago Self-Publishing Fest

The tireless Brent Ritzl of Zine Guide fame and the Chicago Self-Publishers Event Council will be heading down to help host another ‘zine reading at the Urbana-Champaign IMC, 218 W. Main St., Urbana, on Saturday, April 17 at 6:30 PM. I think this will be the fourth reading at the IMC that Chicago SPEC has participated in, and each one has been a blast with some really great readings. I also will be reading a piece from the forthcoming mediageek zine #2.

Then, on the following Saturday, March 24, Chicago SPEC in conjunction with the WLUW Record & Zine Fair will co-host a Self-Publishing and Media Reform Fest at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse, 1419 W. Blackhawk in
Chicago, from 10 am to 6 pm.

I think I’ll be making an effort to attend, and maybe catch some audio (or even video) for the radio show.
